Inkjet Cancellations

December 21, 1992
Test Mail, Mississauga "Gateway" West Letter Processing Plant

 June 27, 2013
Toronto South Central M4L  1A5

Inkjet spray-on printers were introduced by Canada Post in 1992 to cancel mail processed by Optical Character Readers (OCRs) and more advanced Multiline Optical Character Reader machines (MLOCRs). MLORCs have been installed at centralized mechanized mail processing facilities nation-wide.

Canada Post Mechanized Processing Plant locations (2013)

MLOCRs are machines that recognize handwritten or printed addresses, print appropriate barcodes onto envelopes, and then use the information in the barcodes to sort mail into stacks. The Winnipeg Plant which opened on  June 4, 2010 has six MLOCRs, each capable of sorting  40,000 letters per hour.

Each MLORC machine in operation has been assigned a specific number which has been usually included in the ink-jet cancellation.

An Introduction to Ink-Jet Printing

Industrial ink-jet printing, introduced in the 1970s, is commonly used for marking and coding consumer goods.

Inkjet printing creates an image  by propelling droplets of ink onto a surface. In commercial jet-printers, a high-pressure pump directs liquid ink from a reservoir through a gunbody and a microscopic nozzle, creating a continuous stream of ink droplets.

In the early 1990s, Canada Post installed Videojet Excel Series 270 Coder Printers similar to the model shown below at several processing plants.

 Videojet Excel 270 control unit

The printer consisted of the control unit and two print heads each connected to the control unit by umbilical cord containing the wiring and fluid lines.

  Print head

The print heads operated at about 3/16 inch from the printing surface. The print process used a stream of minute electronically charged ink droplets that were electrostatically deflected onto the surface of the envelopes in dot matrix characters. Several font sizes were available selectable from the keyboard.

In addition to the Videojet printers, Canada Post has installed jet-printers from other manufacturers on its MLOCRs

Ink-jet Cancellations : Basic Elements

The two-line cancel was a common format in the 1990s. The cancellation shown below was sprayed-on at the Vancouver processing plant.

The following information was included in the cancellation:
